Helping Advanced Learners Gain Niche Fluency

Chatterbug is a comprehensive language learning tool with an integrated cirriculum, interactive activities and tutor-led video lessons to help you become confident in speaking English, Spanish, French and German.

I led the design to enable advanced learners (CEFR C1-2) to create their own courses and stay engaged to refine their language skills in specialized topics.

Approach

The existing system catered primarily to beginner and intermediate learners (A1–B2). Advanced students lacked meaningful ways to practice at their level, leading to high drop-off rates, nearly 50% after sign-up. Our hypothesis was that if we targeted the DACH region, we would increase live lessons and increase adoption. Key activities included:

  • End-to-end learning experience mapping to identify gaps and drop-off points

  • Wireframing happy-paths and core interaction models around course creation and topic selection

  • Collaborated closely with curriculum developers and engineers to align experience, content, and technical delivery

Outcomes

We introduced a redesigned dashboard that guided students seamlessly into lessons and clearly communicated progress. For advanced learners, we built a flexible course system—allowing them to select specialized topics like Business, Science, or Medicine and personalize their learning paths within the Chatterbug ecosystem.

The updated interface provided a unified structure across all levels, so students could progress naturally from beginner to advanced without friction. The new design system, implemented in React, brought visual clarity and consistency across the app.
