Building a Unique Learning Environment for the Masses

Chatterbug Streams is a video-based language learning application that helps learners improve their speaking and listening comprehension.

I led the UX and marketing design for a mobile-first app that made language learning into a more joyful, efficient experience for over 100k users.

Approach

The existing Tutor product was quite intimidating and appealed only to a niche segment of the language learning community. I led a small design team of 3 designers to design a new mobile-first application and support marketing efforts. Key activities included:

  • Defining projects and deliverables with the CEO

  • Led the development of the visual design system to align with Chatterbug's brand identity while enhancing usability for the new platform's context and needs

  • Oversaw user research to uncover barriers to entry and opportunities for improvement

  • Explored new strategies to boost engagement and retention

Outcomes

Chatterbug Streams became a vibrant and engaging interactive video platform that helped users find content at their level and in a topic they were genuinely interested in. The experience blended short videos guided by engaging native speakers with interactive learning content.

We introduced a darker, more cinematic interface with vibrant illustrations and graphics that complemented Chatterbug’s brand. Through continuous research and performance tracking, we refined the learning flow, improved content discovery, and optimized onboarding and engagement tactics to grow the product to over 100K users.
